The region's ambulance service is calling on motorists to slow down to save lives this winter.

Drivers are being urged to take extra care as the days get shorter and colder over the coming weeks.

Staff from the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust attended 5,081 road traffic collisions last winter, compared with 5,654 the previous year - a decrease of 10pc.

Last week the trust gave its backing to road safety week, which was run by charity Brake from November 20 to 26, encouraging everyone to 'Speed Down Save Lives'.

Road users are being urged to: stick to the speed limits and drive to the road conditions; leave an appropriate distance between your vehicle and the one ahead; give yourself extra time to get to your destination; avoid distractions while driving in winter conditions; never drink and drive; and wear hi-visibility clothing and use lights when walking or cycling in the dark.
