STEPHEN Chilvers (November 7) accuses Waveney MP Bob Blizzard of wanting to see the council tax rise.

Far from that, the MP was simply stating that the district council's incompetent Tory administration wasn't able to set a balanced budget and finding themselves with several millions “up the Swannie”.

In their eagerness to fool the electorate they set a 1.8pc rise knowing very well that they have been designated by the Audit Commission as a weak council for the past four years because of their financial incompetence.

As they get even weaker, what is their solution?

To privatise the East Point Pavilion, the Marina Theatre, the district's swimming pools, caravan sites and any other asset they feel they can get rid of.

Leasing or selling off of public assets gives no benefit to the public. Ask the residents nearby to the Walmer Road sports facilities. Ask the public in Beccles and Halesworth about their pools.

The tourist information centre in the East Point Pavilion is a public service which is essential for a resort town and cannot be hived off to a private contractor.

The restaurant is already leased to a local caterer and has been for 10 years or more. Only the children's play area costs the council any money and no doubt considerably less than the temporary “one stop shop” next to the Marina.

But we must get our priorities right, mustn't we?

I was ejected from a council meeting for pointing out their incompetence and suggesting that a part-time chief executive, however diligent, cannot give the time needed to pull round this administration.

I despair for the residents of Waveney.
