RAILWAY enthusiasts and former train staff gathered to mark 150 years of the East Suffolk Line yesterday.A special weekend of exhibits took place at the Beccles and District Museum, where former railway workers were invited to share their memories and photographs of the line which links Beccles and Lowestoft to London.
RAILWAY enthusiasts and former train staff gathered to mark 150 years of the East Suffolk Line yesterday.
A special weekend of exhibits took place at the Beccles and District Museum, where former railway workers were invited to share their memories and photographs of the line which links Beccles and Lowestoft to London.
Photographs, artefacts from local stations, timetables and maps from over the years were also on display at the museum.
In June 1859, the East Suffolk Railway opened its line between Yarmouth and Ipswich, giving Beccles direct trains to London for the first time. Branches from Beccles to Lowestoft and other Suffolk towns were also built.
The railway had reached Beccles five years previously when the Halesworth, Beccles, and Haddiscoe railway opened its line.
