AN 83-year-old man has lost thousands of pounds after being conned into transferring money to foreign bank accounts.

AN 83-year-old man has lost thousands of pounds after being conned into transferring money to foreign bank accounts.

The victim, who lives in the Waveney area, had been befriended by a man who telephoned him on a regular basis over the past year and said he could claim prize money and a car totalling more than £1m as long as he paid a government tax.

Suffolk police have now launched an investigation and last night urged people to be on their guard against such scams.

Spokesman Anne-Marie Breach said: “We are urging residents not to respond to any unsolicited requests to send money, as there are many scams that ask you to send cash to claim a prize or gift.

“Please do not send cash and be cautious when responding to any correspondence or calls.

“If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

“We do receive reports similar to this on a regular basis and it's sad when somebody of this man's age is targeted and has a lot of money stolen.”

Anyone with information about the latest theft should contact Suffolk police on 01986 835300.
