GOOD news: 'New recruits join district's green police' (Journal, November 7).

Waveney District Council are to be congratulated on this good positive move to combat environmental crime that blights the town and district. Is this the first signs that the 'Making Suffolk the Greenest County' campaign is really going to work?

But wait; doesn't this campaign aim to reduce energy use, as in the stated outcome: '… for Suffolk to be the county with the greatest reduction in carbon emissions?'

No doubt somewhere in the briefing notes for our new recruits there is a fairly exhaustive list of 'environmental crimes', but will it include such things as excessive use of electricity on pointless shop front lighting in broad daylight, to point out an obvious example?

There are, of course, many other example of eco-vandalism that are much less obvious.

For instance; in autumn and spring, how many times does a building's badly set up heating system overshoot, so that, come the afternoon, windows are flung open? Or, worse still, cooling equipment is turned on?

It amazes me that after decades of government awareness schemes so few people seem able to grasp the connection between electricity use and emissions from power stations, and, just as important, reckless over-use of dwindling finite resources.

So, come on everybody, let's have a real go at 'Making Suffolk the Greenest County.'
