ON the continent all the countries have bodies of armed men, called police, whose sole purpose is to keep public order, ie to quell street protests.

To our British eyes, they look like, feel like, and act like a hostile army of occupation.

They are recruited nationally and then shifted around so they will be strangers in the place where they have to operate; they are centrally commanded and not locally accountable and they carry weapons at all times.

This is the model for the European Gendarmerie Force (EGF). One crucial thing about the new Lisbon Treaty that makes it different from all the preceding treaties is that for the first time justice and home affairs are handed over to EU jurisdiction.

This will give the EU the power to introduce corpus juris which will eliminate our habeas corpus (that prohibits imprisonment or persecution unless charged with a specific offence) trial by jury and other safeguards of individual freedom and also to take control of our policing sending in their own EGF to patrol our streets.

It is now also backed by the Treaty of Velsen signed by the five participating states on October 18.

It will very easily be extended to other states too.

As David Miliband confirmed in the Commons all it will need is the consent of the government. And once they are in the country they will refuse to obey even an act of our Parliament ordering them to leave for they will recognise only the supreme authority in Brussels.

Mr Miliband was asked to give an assurance that they will never be allowed to enter Britain and he refused to give it.

When, and it is too certain to say “if”, this new treaty comes into force and we are included in the new united state of Europe the people of Britain will find themselves living on a totally new planet.

There is no comparison with what we are familiar with. It will not be comfortable.

It is absolutely imperative that we ensure that the treaty be ratified only under the condition of a referendum as promised or is rejected on a free vote in Parliament.
