NEXT weekend a number of pensioners and their families will be meeting in the Midlands to reminisce about a remarkable time in their lives.

On Friday many former evacuees will be visiting their wartime homes in Worksop, Whitwell, Barlborough, Clowne, Creswell, Shirebrook, Langwith and Doe Lea, before uniting for an official reception at Whitwell.

Amongst those hoping to attend is Eva Berry who was evacuated from Notley Road School.

Mrs Berry, nee Howe, was evacuated from Lawson Road to Whitwell on June 2, 1940. She left with her sister Iris and would go on to make her life in the village.

She features in this photograph of Notley Road senior girls in Whitwell, and after we printed it last month, her daughter Linda Durr contacted us to help identify some of the girls featured.

Mrs Durr said: 'My cousin Stephen Berry, who lives in Lowestoft, sent my mum a copy of the article. My mum has the original photos, and she is the third girl in the middle row looking from the left.'

Others in the photo are: back row, Miss Baker, Joan Smith, Gloria Newrick, Joan Wooley, Pauline Gage and Hazel Cobbs; middle row, Molly Bolton, Joan Britten, Eva Howe, Ena Snowlin, Fullard and Joan Tuttle; front row, Daisy Catchpole, Marjorie Beckett, Joan Hallam, Lilly Bullard, unknown, Grace Kirby, Valerie Catchpole and Violet Daniels.

'All my mum can remember is that Iris got a job in the local post office and met her husband John. They were married at Whitwell Church on my uncle's first leave from the Army in 1942,' Linda said.

'Mum met my dad George about four years later and they were married in Lowestoft, but later returned to Whitwell.

'In June 1990 a re-union was held at Lowestoft for the 50th anniversary and my mum and her sister were featured in an article that appeared in our local paper the Worksop Guardian as two sisters who married two brothers.'

Iris and John Berry returned to live in Lowestoft, before their deaths. Linda's father George has also died, but she is hoping that her mum is fit enough to attend Friday's reunion.
