MORE than 7,000 households in Lowestoft are about to be introduced to greener and healthier forms of transport for everyday journeys.

The TravelSmart Lowestoft project begins its third and final phase today, with homes in Gunton, Corton, Harbour and St Margaret's receiving information and support that encourages people to switch to greener ways of travelling when and where it suits them best.

Sustrans expects to see the kind of positive results in Lowestoft that have been achieved in TravelSmart projects elsewhere, such as reductions in car trips of 10pc or more, and increases in levels of walking, cycling and public transport use.

Maeve Tomlinson, Sustrans TravelSmart Lowestoft Project Officer, said: 'We know from similar projects across England that people are willing to leave their cars behind when they are given decent information and alternatives.

'There are huge potential benefits to Lowestoft from this project, such as reduced congestion, a safer and more pleasant environment for people to live and work in, and of course great health benefits to the individual.'

Contact with these households will run until December, and a final report will be released next year highlighting how the project has affected the ways that people in Lowestoft choose to travel.

The project is being delivered by Sustrans and Socialdata, in partnership with Suffolk County Council and Waveney District Council. It has also received funding from Big Lottery Fund's Wellbeing Programme as part of a wider 19.9m grant awarded by BIG to Sustrans' Active Travel Consortium.
