How to pop the question - the eternal dilemma for anyone looking to put a ring on it and affirm their love with a proposal of marriage.
For one Lowestoft man, the matter of how to propose to his partner was always a case of ‘go hard or go home.’
When 32-year-old Leon Culley decided the time was right to ask for Clodagh Clancy’s hand, there began a top secret operation to enlist the services of a flash mob and give his wife-to-be a day she would never forget.
After months of preparation, on Saturday afternoon, March 17, he finally put his plan into action in Lowestoft town centre with the help of friends, family and local people who simply wanted to ensure it was a day to remember.
“I always knew I wanted to do something big,” said Leon. “It was just a matter of figuring out what it would be.
“I looked online for inspiration and thought a flash mob would be a good idea as I always wanted something that included friends and family.
“I couldn’t find any flash mob proposals with ‘Let’s Get Married’ by The Proclaimers, so we rehearsed to that song on Monday evenings at the Seagull Theatre in Pakefield to coincide with my rugby training so it wouldn’t look suspicious.”
The couple’s relationship didn’t begin in a conventional manner, with 25-year-old Clodagh living in Galway and Leon in Suffolk. But, having started exchanging messages in August 2015 via a dating app, the pair hit it off from the word go and the rest, as they say, is history.
They flew back and forth until Clodagh moved to Lowestoft permanently in May last year.
On Saturday, she thought the trip to town with her mum would be a quick detour prior to watching Leon play rugby for Lowestoft & Yarmouth, but was soon whisked onto an elaborately decorated carriage and greeted by an abundance of familiar faces, cameras and dancing.
The mob held up signs and there were surprise appearances from Clodagh’s family, before the crowd finally parted to reveal Leon. Using Love Actually-style signs, he asked Clodagh to marry him and got down one knee. Thankfully, she said yes!
“In all honesty, the last thing I had any worries about was Clo saying yes,” added Leon. “I wouldn’t have put myself in the spotlight if I didn’t!”
“I can’t believe the extent to which people were willing to go out of their way to help me; I’m so grateful to everyone.”
