IT has been a 'very busy' few weeks for the team who continue to help keep Lowestoft tidy.

With thousands of people flocking to the district for major events such as the Lowestoft air show, Lowestoft carnival, the Eastern Lights get-together and Halesworth's Gig in the Park, the cleansing team at Waveney has also been involved in the district's entries in the regional Anglia in Bloom contest.

And according to Mike Daniels, cleansing service manager for Waveney Norse and partners Waveney District Council, the street cleaners deserve lots of praise.

'I always find it amazing how on each morning of the air show you wouldn't know that there had been an event the previous day.'

All this work was carried out on top of the cleansing team's normal rounds, and Mr Daniels hailed this as 'an amazing effort'.

Already this month the cleansing team has been working with Suffolk Wildlife Trust to tackle litter and dog fouling at their sites.

'We have also installed a new dog foul bin at their site in Gunton and we're looking at ways of improving the problem at Carlton Marshes by installing a dog foul and litter bin there,' Mr Daniels said.

The team has also been working with the Green Drive Action Group as its efforts to turn a nearby area into a village green continue.

But the good news has been tempered by 15 reports of fly tipping, mainly of white goods and furniture, in Lowestoft in the past week alone.

Mr Daniels said: 'All could have been taken to the waste site in south Lowestoft and one of the worst cases was a van load of tyres, computers and plastic dumped on an unmade road in Yarmouth Road. Unfortunately, this caused disruption to several residents as they couldn't get out of their drives.

'It would appear that a resident had paid someone to take the waste away. They did not get a receipt or a vehicle registration.

'If you are paying to have waste removed please ask for a receipt, check to see if they have a waste carriers licence or at the very least make a note of the vehicle registration number,' Mr Daniels said.
