A few months ago, a Lowestoft high school entertained audiences with a festive spectacular.

But next week 100 students will be taking to the stage at Benjamin Britten Music Academy for three performances of its end-of-year show, The Wizard of Oz, which is being billed as 'an all-singing, all-dancing performance of one of the most famous musicals of all time.'

Inviting audiences to venture over the rainbow, The Wizard of Oz will be showcased at the school on Blyford Road next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, July 18-20.

After 100 students from all year groups auditioned and were successful in securing roles in the summer production, with a further 25 students in the technician crew, the youngsters have been rehearsing for the past 10 weeks to bring this classic to life.

Head of Performing Arts, Corinne Breen, said: 'The staff and students have worked so hard to bring the magic of The Wizard of Oz to our school. Every year our students put on an amazing show and this is no exception.

'I am so privileged to work alongside them and showcase their talents to the community. This has been a wonderful year for Performing Arts the students and staff are still on such a high from Wembley and winning Rock Challenge and to finish off with such an amazing show as this one is a fantastic way to end the school year.'

Mrs Breen added: 'The technical and backstage crew led by Mr Chapman are the biggest team we have ever had in a show and it is a real credit to the students who are able to create the wow factor on stage with special effects and amazing magic tricks. Students are also involved in the makeup design to bring these iconic characters to life.'

With a professional set hired for the occasion, which will include flame throwers, glitter and smoke cannons, and professional stage costumes, it promises to be truly spectacular.

Jamie Coleman, year 11 student, said: 'I have been in every show since joining BBMA and I can't believe it is my last. I have loved every minute of Performing Arts and am so happy that I get to play the Wicked Witch of the West.'

With this year's performance of The Wizard of Oz taking place on the evenings of July 18, 19 and July 20, the community is welcome to show their support for all of the hard work and energy shown by the students and staff.

Tickets are currently on sale from the school reception costing £8 each.
