Fears for the future of one of Lowestoft's biggest employers have been allayed with the 'fantastic news' that marine research organisation Cefas will be remaining in the town, safeguarding more than 400 jobs.
Prime Minister David Cameron has announced that funding will be provided to the Centre for Environment, Aquaculture and Fisheries Science for the redevelopment of its site at Pakefield.
The government organisation - which provides high-level research into areas such as fisheries management, climate change and marine biodiversity - had been undergoing a review into its future, with fears raised that it could close due to concerns over the state of its building.
The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) was also considering moving to another site in Lowestoft, moving to nearby Norwich or even moving to another part of the country - with the potential loss of more than 400 jobs for the wider area.
However a Cefas spokesman said the review had concluded that Cefas would remain a part of Defra and stay at the Pakefield base which has been its home since 1955.
Community leaders such as Waveney MP Peter Aldous and Waveney District Council leader Colin Law have welcomed the move.
