Creative children at one Lowestoft primary school have been honoured in a worldwide contest.

Three children from Gunton Primary Academy were praised for their creativity and imaginative entries after winning awards in the 15th World Haiku contest.

Originating from Japan, haiku is the shortest form of poetry in the world. And after entering into the children's world haiku contest, which is organised by the JAL Foundation annually along with the Japan Society, the three youngsters scooped some 'great prizes.'

Matthew Jordan, headteacher at the academy in Gainsborough Drive, said: 'Gunton Primary Academy is really proud and delighted to share the success of their Key Stage 2 children in the 15th world haiku competition.

'The children were challenged to create their own haiku on the theme of 'Living Things' and submit it with an accompanying illustration.'

This year 26,000 haiku were sent to the JAL Foundation from 53 countries. As part of Gunton Primary's modern foreign languages provision all children in Years 3 to 6 wrote haiku as part of understanding Japanese culture – with the three children chosen as winners.

Mr Jordan said: 'Congratulations to Rafe Dewsnap, Felix Dewsnap and Jessica Pritchard on such a fantastic achievement.'

The winning poems will be published on the JAL Foundation website.
