MORE than 200 people attended the inaugural Lowestoft and Waveney Chamber of Commerce Business Awards in a glittering ceremony held at Oulton Broad's Wherry Hotel.

The event highlighted the wide range of business expertise in the Waveney area and it is hoped it will become an annual fixture on the business calendar.

The top award of the evening - the Chamber and President's Outstanding Business of the Year Award - went to Harrod UK of Pinbush Road, Lowestoft.

The company has an international reputation for the manufacture of sports equipment and has more recently introduced a highly successful garden produces division.

George Swietlik, President of chamber, said: “The business awards 2008 is a way of giving something back to those successful and proactive companies who, by helping themselves, are helping the growth of the local business community.

“We showcased the energy and optimism that we at the chamber know is abundant in our area. The awards provided us with a great opportunity to present the positive benefits of both living and working in such an industrious region.”

Linda Thornton, chief officer of the chamber, said: “We are delighted that The Journal agreed to be the headline sponsor along with individual categories sponsored exclusively by our patrons which include Bob Blizzard MP.

“In addition, local radio station The Beach sponsored the retail award along with the Britten Centre.

Helen McDermott hosted the evening and there was cabaret by singer Kerry Kennedy.

Other top award winners included Lings Honda of Riverside Road, Lowestoft, MR King and Sons, of Horn Hill, Lowestoft, and Southwold-based creative agency Spring.

Spring won the Excellence in Marketing award sponsored by The Journal and also won the Business Growth category.

Managing director Erika Clegg said: “We are absolutely delighted and very grateful to the chamber and the judges for choosing us to win these awards.”

The stage of the Brown Boat Room at the Wherry Hotel had been transformed to form the centre piece of the awards presentation ceremony, on Thursday, last week.

Members of the Lowestoft-based Special Objectives for the Local Disabled (SOLD) assisted the chamber by constructing the framework for the posters and displays.
