HOW arrogant of council spokesman Phil Harris to state the shortfall in money made by council-run car parks was nothing to do with the extortionate increase in fees.

I agree with Waveney MP Bob Blizzard that this increase must have been the last nail in the coffin for lots of local traders.

Mention is made of a cut in one-hour rates to 50p (a massive reduction of 5p).

Nothing is mentioned, however, that on several car parks north and south of the bascule bridge, one hour parking is not an option; £3 is the minimum charge.

Yes, you can stay for three hours if needed, but if my arithmetic is correct this works out at £1 per hour, not 50p.

This I found out to my chagrin when having to use one of these car parks as I had an appointment in town. Two hours parking would have been ample but I did not have the choice.

Is it no wonder shoppers are going to Beccles and other towns.

I notice Beccles is having a Laura Ashley store opening soon. Lowestoft has never had a Laura Ashley store - I wonder why?
