A LOWESTOFT primary school is in with a chance of winning a 2009 Drawing Inspiration Award after taking part in The Big Draw.

Elm Tree Primary was one of the few primary schools to take part in the national event encouraging people to take up drawing.

From late October and in to November about 235 pupils, aged from four to nine years old, along with about 100 adults joined together in projects led by the school's art team of Lucy Parker and Amanda Javes.

'We invited invited all our children to bring a grown up to school and participate in a drawing session with the child as an artist in their own right.

'Children took the lead in supporting adult creativity challenging negative beliefs about grown up's creativity.

'Grown ups experienced first hand experience of what art lessons are all about and worked in ways that involved letting go in an environment that supported the uninhibited with activities that had that element of the ridiculous about them without being intimidated,' explained Ms Javes.

'The dancing and drawing was a huge success, oil pastels were flying! Walking through paint in bare feet or wellies was a firm favourite as was mark making in response to music from Vanessa Mae's 'Sabre Dance' to Ella Fitzgerald doing jazz.

'The event created a unique opportunity to share quality time with our visitors and their families. We had four generations of one family at one session,' she said.

Elm Tree Primary also took part in Denes High School's Big Draw event and as a result a partnership has been cemented between the two schools.

Elm Tree Primary is currently applying to be put forward for The Drawing Inspiration Awards 2009.
