IN response to Joe Eagle's comments (December 7) I would like to reassure him that I am in fact very much in touch with the needs of the “average person” having worked and volunteered on community projects in Waveney, having a young family and trying my best to stay on top of the monthly bills.

I spend most of the week talking to “average people” although average is not a word I would choose to describe myself or anyone else.

In my original letter you will find that I did not ask that everyone immediately dispose of their cars, I merely suggested that people take a moment to go for a bike ride.

Three quarters of journeys made are still under five miles and half under two. Most local journeys, especially in cities and towns, can be made more quickly by bike than car. Add to this the fact that there are no fuel costs and evidence that exercise has a positive effect on mental and physical health - cycling or walking have far greater benefits than just reducing the number of cars using our roads.

Using a bike should be pleasurable, not a chore.

I am totally aware that there will always be times when other forms of transport will beat using a bike or walking - what is important is to cycle or walk more times when you don't really need to use a car.

A third crossing alone is not the solution to the traffic congestion we face in Lowestoft - what is needed is a truly integrated transport system which will enable people to travel where they need. More safe cycling and walking routes, improved and cheaper public transport and better local services will reduce the number of cars using our roads and benefit everyone including those that need to travel by car.

So indeed grab your hat, scarf, thermal underwear and raincoat and go for a bike ride - with or without the rose tinted cycling goggles it will make you feel good.
