THERE is less than two weeks for businesses to enter one of the area's most prestigious awards ceremonies.

The deadline for the Lowestoft and Waveney Chamber of Commerce Business Awards is Wednesday, September 24.

This is the first year that the chamber has organised the awards and chief officer Linda Thornton is delighted with the entries received so far.

“We have a lot of successful businesses in the Lowestoft, Waveney and Great Yarmouth area. While we are so pleased to have had so many entries we would very much welcome even more,” she said.

“There are categories for businesses of all types and all sizes and entering could not be easier,” said Ms Thornton.

One of the companies that has been nominated for an award is Harrod UK Ltd based at Pinbush Road, on the South Lowestoft Industrial Estate.

The sports equipment and horticulture manufacturer is a family-run business that was founded by its present chairman Ron Harrod in 1954.

The company has traditionally taken great pride in employing local people. Although a well-established sports equipment manufacturer with an international reputation for excellence - the company provided goal posts and corner flags when England hosted the European football championships in 1996 - managers were concerned that the work was very seasonal.

“July to October was exceptionally busy with the rest of the year being very difficult for us in our existing market. We needed to find other markets that were niche and filled the seasonal troughs,” said manufacturing director David Bowling.

After brainstorming sessions involving staff the idea to explore manufacturing and selling garden products such as fruit cages was born. The result has been an increase in turnover from £6m in 2003 to more than £10m in 2007.

It is successes like this across the Waveney business sector that will be highlighted at the awards presentation ceremony being hotsted by broadcaster Helen McDermott at the Wherry Hotel, Oulton Broad, on November 20.

Tickets are now available from the Lowestoft and Waveney Chamber of Commerce costing £30 plus VAT each.

Details of all categories and an application form are available by visiting www.waveneychamber.co.uk (click on the Business Awards 2008 link).
