Although Geoff Durrant was unable to attend Friday's meeting, which was a special celebration of the Brooke Marine shipyard, the evening was one of memories galore. However, it must be admitted that Geoff's knowledge, especially of the men he photographed at he shipyard in the late 1950s, and especially any anecdotes he had of that period, was sorely missed. But memories were soon coming, in particular from those who once worked at the yard in Heath Road and the show continued with rare and never seen before photographs of cruisers, the building of the Russian and British trawlers, naval vessels, and the Virgin Atlantic Challenger II, and naturally, the men who built them. Continuing the theme of Lowestoft's once great industries, the evening finished off with a film presented by Keith Lewis of the equally much-missed Eastern Coachworks seen in its post-war heyday.

The next meeting will be at 7.30 pm on Friday 8 May at Trinity Methodist Church, High Street, when Donald Friston will be talking about the history of Corton School. Contact the secretary on 01502 564601 for further details.
