Daniel Gorman, 22, formerly of Normanston Drive, Lowestoft, was sentenced in 2004 to six years in a young offenders' institution after being found guilty of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent on 57-year-old Edward Nelson.
Mr Nelson, who was left in a vegetative state, died in 2006 and Gorman, now of Harpenden, Hertfordshire, was rearrested and charged with murder.
It has been alleged that Mr Nelson, of London Road South, Lowestoft, was attacked because of unfounded claims he was a child molester.
Gorman, who is standing trial at Ipswich Crown Court, denies murder and claims another man was responsible for causing Mr Nelson's head injuries.
