A SINGER, who has had the honour of performing in front of the Queen, will be providing the entertainment for this year's Journal Carnival Queen.

Kerry Kennedy has been playing to audiences for more than 10 years and will take to the stage of the Marina Theatre, in Lowestoft, on Friday, June 27, as vocalist for the evening.

The 36-year-old said she was delighted to have been asked to support the event which is raising money for the Palliative Care Unit at the James Paget University Hospital.

She said: “It's a very worthwhile cause, which will provide comfort and positive surroundings which cannot fail to be beneficial to patients and their families. I've lost a few relatives to cancer and a very good friend of mine so it's a charity I would like to get more involved in.”

Kerry has had classical training, so she performs an eclectic range of music of everything from Dusty Springfield to Duffy, and a little bit of opera as well.

She has sung for large audiences and small, both in this country and abroad, at gigs and church weddings, with her most high profile audience being the Queen and Prince Phillip, who she was selected to sing for at the tender age of 14, when she was still at school.

“It was when she was visiting Great Yarmouth and they wanted some people to sing a special welcome song for her and I was chosen,” said Kerry. “I'm really excited about the show as although I've sung in a lot of places it's a chance to sing in a lovely theatre.”

There is still time to get your entries in for the competition which has attracted the support of many businesses, who have provided more than £3,000 of prizes to the winning girl.

You must be 16 or more and it doesn't matter if you are a student, housewife, single mother of married woman.

Judges will shortlist 20 girls from the entry forms we receive based on the answers given to seven questions included in the coupon on this page.

Those picked will then be treated to a free sitting at Picture Studios, in London Road North, with their pictures featured in The Journal the week before the competition.

On the evening each girl will be asked to bring an evening gown of their choice to wear and will be designated a backstage dressing room, while their make-up will be taken care of by Clinique representatives Tracey Waterer and Karen Taylor, who work at the Boots store, in Lowestoft. All contestants will also receive a goodie bag, courtesy of Clinique.

Tickets at £5 are on sale for the event at the Marina box office or telephone 01502 533200.

If you would like a chance to represent the newspaper and your town fill in the coupon. The closing date for entries is 5pm on Friday, May 30.

Kerry regularly sings at wedding ceremonies, parties and special occasions and is available for bookings. Telephone 07887 984341.
