A YOUTH club which faced the threat of closure two years ago is now extending its services in Suffolk's largest village.

The Hangout in Kessingland, near Lowestoft, has gone from strength to strength since a campaign was launched in 2008 to keep the community centre open and now provides safe activities for dozens of children every week.

Based next to the community centre in Francis Road, the club's members are now involved with various projects in the village including tackling anti-social behaviour and graffiti in the bus shelter on Field Lane.

Now its success is now being marked by funding from Kessingland Parish Council to open for a third night each week.

Michele Mouzer, who helps to run the youth club, said that young people from as far as Carlton Colville and Kirkley have started coming to the Hangout.

She said: “The young people are truly an inspiration in how they are always willing to join in with community projects and continue to support the youth centre they use, so to have a third night opening really will make a difference and goes a long way in showing them that all their hard work is worth it.”

Parish council clerk Lesley Beevor said: “We've agreed to fund Wednesday openings so that there's more provision for the village's young people. They do great work and it's a really important facility.”

The youth club members are also working with the council to offer ideas for the new play area at the Marram Green centre off hall Road.

The Hangout is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7pm.
