Kirkley park clean-up to take place

Clean-up events are being planned at a Kirkley park to ensure it is looking its best for the summer.

Fen Park Friends have held a number of campaigns over the past 12 years to regenerate the site in Southwell Road, including revamping the play area with a Lottery grant and creating a sensory garden.

However it is some time since those improvements were put in place and a new committee of the Friends group has identified key areas to improve following a meeting with Waveney Norse - contractors of Waveney District Council, who help maintain the site - at a meeting on Tuesday (February 3).

It will start with a litter pick tomorrow (Saturday, February 7), between 10am and 2pm, to help clear rubbish from the lake area and other parts of the park.

Clare Strachan, who has recently taken over as chairman of Fen Park Friends, said: “Waveney Norse are great at coming round and clearing up but you do get quite a lot of litter and and even trolleys left lying around.

“We are determined, after spending all that money, that we are going to keep the park as clean as we can.”

It will be followed by a pruning day on Saturday, February 21, when volunteers will cut back overgrown shrubs, trees and flower beds, particularly along walkways to ensure they are safe for members of the public to use.

Maintenance days to help paint fences, repair noticeboards and fix broken benches are also scheduled for future dates.

Mrs Strachan said: “I’ve grown up living next door to the park and the kids really have got absolutely nowhere to call their own.

“It is generally a really valuable community asset.

“It’s on on our doorstep and we want this park kept for everyone.”

She added that it was also popular with dog walkers and provided a valuable fishing site.

Volunteers are welcome to help out with tomorrow’s litter pick.

Children need to be accompanied by an adult and people are encouraged to dress sensibly for the weather, as well as bring a hot drink.
