STAFF at Kirkley Middle School chose to collapse the curriculum to enjoy a whole day of writing.

The school, in Southwell Road, observed the national Everybody Writes Day designed to offer children imaginative scenarios and a variety of resources, to help them enjoy the art of picking up a pen.

During the day pupils were given an extra hand from their parents, carers and grandparents, who helped find innovative ways for children to express themselves.

Amongst the activities was creating a message in a bottle, writing in chalk on the playground, writing tiny letters designed for ants and re-writing the Thriller song, by Michael Jackson.

The day was organised by English teacher Donna Brown and assisted by librarian Sharon Ellis.

Each class took part in a 30-minute pick and mix activity session which also included a talk by local historian Ian Robb and the art of Shakespeare.
