Kojo aims for Olympics after marathon success

A former Lowestoft man has finished in the top 20 of the New York Marathon and now has big dreams of competing at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.
Kojo Kyereme, 40 received a cash prize for finishing in third place in the Masters 40 category- for runners aged 40 and over- and a crystal plate for finishing in 20th position overall.
Mr Kyereme, running his first ever New York Marathon, achieved a personal best time of two hours 26 minutes and 17 seconds, surpassing his previous best at the London Marathon in 2006.
He is already preparing for the Olympics 10,000 metre trials in London next May and if he is successful, he will become part of the British team competing in Brazil.
Mr Kyereme was born in Lowestoft, attended Kirkley High School and his parents still live in the town.

He now works as a cardiac physiology manager at Spire St Anthony's Hospital in Surrey.
'I'm over the moon at coming 20th position. The result is the reward for all my hard work and dedication,' he said.

'I under-estimated the difficulty of the course which is much more hilly than the London Marathon with steep bridges.
'I enjoyed the experience with the enthusiastic crowd, including my friends, encouraging me. My wife couldn't be there, but she followed my progress on an app.'
Mr Kyereme, who was also the first ever winner of the Lowestoft Scores Race, described how he had cramps in his calves for the last four miles of the race, in which 50,000 other runners took part.
But he attributes his success to the training regime he followed eight weeks prior to the New York Marathon, when he ran 110 miles a week.
'This is very important to me, but I need to improve by one and a half minutes to meet the qualifying standard for the Olympics. To reach that standard is a tall order, but I'm going to rise to the challenge,' Mr Kyereme added.
'My priority was to finish the race so I decided not to have any water because just sticking out my arm for water would give me a cramp.
'On weekdays I meet a running group at 6am for a 10 to 15 mile run, run five miles at lunchtime and then another run after work.'
Mr Kyereme is also planning to compete in the Berlin Marathon in Germany next September.
