Construction of a new enterprise zone on the site of a factory ravaged by fire reached a key landmark this week.

The Phoenix Enterprise Park, built on the location of the former Wessex Foods site, promises to be a key asset for Lowestoft once completed, with hopes it will bring more than 100 new jobs.

This week, a key landmark for the development was met, with a topping out of main structure of the units.

Representatives from the various partners involved in the project - including Suffolk County Council, Waveney District Council and New Anglia Local Enterprise Parnership - each placed signatures on the final piece of roof cladding, before it was triumphantly put in place.

Once completed, the site will provide 16 small units, which can be used for business, industrial, storage or distribution purposes, with the project costing £6.5 million.

Jane Story, deputy leader of Suffolk County Council, said: 'I look forward to seeing the completed business units on site in the spring and welcome the first new tenants as they begin their exciting future and help us to kick-start to south Lowestoft Enterprise Zone.'

Julian Munson, head of innovation and enterprise zones at New Anglia LEP said: 'The redevelopment of this site is a testament to the confidence that exists in Lowestoft right now.

'Our enterprise zone sites continue to be a catalyst for economic growth and job creation and we are confident Phoenix Enterprise Park will only add to that.'

Units on the nine acre site - which is located on the South Lowestoft Industrial Park off of Hadenham Road - have already been made available for potential tenants, with completion scheduled for March 2018.

The development is being worked on by construction team Morgan Sindall and design company Concertus, both of which had representatives at the topping out ceremony.

The site is situated where Wessex Foods once stood, which was destroyed in a devastating fire in 2010, and is one of four enterprise zones in the Lowestoft area.

It is hoped that once all the new units are occupied by businesses, around 130 new jobs will have been created.
