SIX individuals and two groups were presented with awards after being chosen as Achievers of the Year as part of the Waveney Learning Community Adult Learners Week activities.

The awards were given out by Gwen Parsons, principal of Lowestoft College, at a ceremony was held at the Kirkley Centre, following its official opening last Friday.

The achievers, all members of the local community from Lowestoft College, St Johns Housing, and The Crossing, had through learning made a great change to their lives by helping others in the community.

The group awards were The Whitton Life Caf and Gunton Community Lunch Club. Both groups had got together and seen a gap in the community and are now providing much needed facilities where local residents can come, meet others and make new friends.

Both groups have undertaken learning to be able to run the luncheon club and the caf and are now looking at further ideas and projects in their community.

All the achievers had overcome barriers and difficulties to prove that they could make a difference and were happy to share this with everyone.

The commitment and inspiration of all of these people and seeing how it has made them feel valued, more confident and feel part of their community helping others is remarkable and will make others see that learning can change your life.

The 'Never Too Late to Learn' 2010 booklet is available to anyone and this shows what learning is on offer in Waveney. If you would like a copy and more information on learning opportunities please ring the Waveney Learning Community on 01502 539711.
