I AM one of the homing co-ordinators for Country Cat Shelter and I would like to thank the public for their concern on the matter of the five abandoned cats left in a carrier just over two weeks ago.

Thankfully they are all making good progress.

I must add that it is not always easy to get all unwanted animals into rescues.

We had to do a lot of juggling to squeeze this little family in. One or two cats had to be moved from pens into fosterers', spare bedrooms; not an ideal situation, then our 21st century is far from ideal.

Please do not take any animal on if you cannot afford to care for it. Horses and ponies are now top of the list of unwanted animals. Ponies can be bought for £50 nowadays, as many people are having to off-load expensive pastimes. Cats and dogs are usually left to roam the streets as people have to move to private rented accommodation and cannot take pets.

It costs the Country Cat Shelter about £35,000 a year to maintain our high standard of care for our cats.

Eight dedicated women run our charity shop in Beccles; we also ask for a reasonable donation when somebody offers a home to one of our cats.

Like all animal charities we are totally self-funded. The local RSPCA and Cats Protection are bursting at the seams with unwanted pets.

Please do not allow young cats to have kittens, these will join the ranks of the unwanted in six months time.

People waiting to adopt a cat must live on a reasonably safe road and must provide the animal with a good standard of care for its whole life. Cats live to be teenagers, so bear that in mind.
