Lidl’s revamp of large Lowestoft store

A discount supermarket in Lowestoft could soon be demolishing its existing store to replace it with a larger foodstore.
The Lidl store in Peto Way has submitted plans to Waveney District Council to demolish the existing foodstore building on the site and construct a larger replacement building, with an amended parking layout.
The proposals were due to be discussed by Waveney’s planning committee on Thursday, February 25 – however revised plans were submitted before the meeting.
A council spokesman said: “These revised details are under consideration, however a date has not yet been set for the application to go before the committee.”
Currently, the Lidl store – which is near to the North Quay Retail Park – comprises an existing single storey foodstore building and a car park with 124 spaces, which was constructed in 2005.
The company wants to provide a “replacement foodstore” with an additional 691sq m (gross) of floorspace. Of the proposed increase, the company wants to provide 183sq m of that increase at first floor level for staff facilities.
And with the proposal to revise the car park’s layout, it is proposed that 18 spaces would be lost from the existing 124 spaces.
In submitting the proposals to Waveney, the design and access statement says: “As part of Lidl’s commitment to both maintain the quality and environment of its stores and maintain availability of products to it’s customers, Lidl is undertaking a programme of improvements to stores across the country.
“At Lowestoft the opportunity to enlarge and refurbish the existing store has been examined in detail, and the conclusion has been reached that complete replacement would be the best way forward. This application is therefore for a new larger building replacing the existing.”
The revised plans are likely to be discussed by councillors in coming weeks.
