A nine-year-old stroke survivor has raised more than £600 for charity after completing a 5K run.

Lily Dewbery, of Grosvenor Road, Lowestoft, took part in the Stroke Association's Resolution Run last weekend.

Around 300 people entered the event, which was held at Catton Park in Norwich, to support stroke survivors and their families as they rebuild their lives.

Lily initially hoped to raise £500 for the Stroke Association but so far £643 has been donated to her JustGiving page – with more still being counted from collection buckets.

The heroic youngster completed the race alongside her mother Amanda, who described the day as 'surprisingly emotional'.

She said: 'Lily's stroke is not something we, as a family, still get upset about.

'But the atmosphere was so lovely, as we made our way round people were cheering for Lily and calling her name having seen her story in the paper.

'We also saw people who had treated Lily when she first had the stroke.

'It just reminded us how bad it was and how far we have come.'

Lily was just four-years-old when she suffered a stroke during the night which rendered the left side of her unresponsive.

In the aftermath of the incident she was restricted to her old buggy when leaving the house and struggled to walk.

Lily regained her strength through years of physiotherapy and wanted to raise awareness for other children who had undergone similar experiences.

On Sunday she completed the course in 46 minutes beating her personal best by two minutes.

Mrs Dewbery said: 'It's been lovely for Lily. She loved watching the money go up on the JustGiving page and reading all the kind messages from strangers.

'It all just gives you that warm fuzzy feeling.'

She added: 'We were so proud of Lily anyway – it doesn't take a race to make us realise how awesome she is.

'But it was the fact she was doing it for other people. Lily is passionate that many more people know children have strokes too.

'We are keen to support the Stroke Association so it can continue to support families that find themselves in the same scary position we did.'
