IN common with many, I have for long been appalled at the amount of litter desecrating our roadside verges.

Occasionally, I have wondered exactly where this litter comes from.

Usually the motorist is blamed and thus vilified. But how often does a motorist actually throw large items of rubbish from the car?

Recently, the mystery was explained.

I was travelling north along the A12 and caught up with a lorry which had just emerged from the turnoff to the landfill waste disposal site near North Cove.

I followed this lorry for several miles and was disgusted to see large quantities of rubbish continually blowing off this supposedly empty lorry which was not tarpaulin covered.

Looking more closely, this explains why the routes from our local household waste disposal sites at Beccles and Lowestoft, to the landfill site, are particularly badly littered.

Perhaps the principle of "polluter pays" or at least - "polluter clears up his mess" should be applied here.
