Providing volunteers at last year's Lowestoft Seafront Air Festival has led to the 1st Carlton Colville Air Scouts receiving a welcome reward.

The Air Scouts' leaders, friends and supporters staffed an entrance gate at Pakefield on both days of the air show and the £660 they received for this help has enabled them to buy archery equipment for the youngsters to use.

Leader Rodney Turner said: “We were able to purchase the new archery equipment entirely from the commission we received for helping at the airshow. This will provide a new activity for us and will benefit up to 80 children. We already have a qualified archery instructor but previously we have had to borrow equipment.”

Mr Turner added that the senior Scouts section was currently full but the junior section, for cubs and beavers, was open to new members, and for more information contact Mr Turner on 01502 584000.

A total of 27 local clubs, organisations and charities helped out at the 2009 Air Festival. They provided an army of volunteers who staffed the park and ride operation, acted as stewards and collectors and sold programmes and merchandise.

Their bucket collections brought in a record £120,000, which went towards the £300,000 cost of the Air Festival and, as a result, organisers were able to hand back more than £28,000 to all the helpers.

Brian Hunter, the Air Festival director responsible for stewards and collectors, said: “This active involvement and assistance from so many local clubs and organisations has resulted in air show donations enabling them to continue to support our local community by providing and enhancing opportunities in their own fields of interests.”

Many of these organisations are already offering assistance at this year's Air Festival, which is being held on Thursday, August 12 and Friday, August 13.
