After celebrating their 30th birthday last year with a special trip to Bewilderwood Adventure Park, the Suffolk Beaver Scouts decided to turn their attention to helping others this year.

Brian Harvey, assistant county commissioner for Suffolk asked his colonies to enjoy the sweets inside Smarties tubes and then refill the empty containers with 20 pence pieces.

Mr Harvey said: “A Smarties tube holds £12 and Beavers in Lowestoft filled theirs by earning money by doing chores around the house. I am extremely proud of all our colonies in Lowestoft who have been busy beavering away to earn their 20ps.

“With the proceeds they chose to support Topcats, a charity that is committed to providing supported activities and opportunities for young people with disabilities and additional needs.”

Mr Harvey and the Beavers gathered at their district sleepover at Herringfleet to hand over the cheque for £228 to Stuart Battrick, chairman of Topcats charity.
