Charity supporting vulnerable people launches Access to Theatre scheme
A charity which supports vulnerable people in Lowestoft is launching an exciting new creative project.
Access Community Trust is putting theatre on its programme to help people build their self-confidence and learn new skills through the Access to Theatre scheme.
Working in partnership with Waveney District Council, Introduction to Theatre workshops are being held each Monday at Sams Café on Bevan Street East.
Access Community Trust helps people overcome the barriers to living independently such as mental health issues, lack of training and education and helps to integrate socially excluded people back into society.
Lee Johnson, arts and culture education coordinator for Access Community Trust, said: “Theatre is often a way for people to be someone else. One of our participants has said how he wants to reinvent himself through the Introduction to Theatre workshops.
“This project will bring people together to learn new skills and develop any hidden talents they have.
“Everyone should have access to something creative and this project could be one of them.”
The workshops have been wholly funded by Waveney District Council’s community enabling fund.
Mr Johnson added: “It is hoped that this project will help to break down any barriers, help people with poor mental health and will develop skills and abilities and build confidence. The programme will be used to help bring our customers together, to learn and develop their creative side.”
The project is open to all ages, with current members’ ranging from 16-years-old up to 72.
The group has already formed a small ensemble called ‘The Escapades’ and the company are keen to stage a production of Macbeth in the summer next year.
The sessions have been funded to run until summer 2018 however, if they are proving popular Access Community Trust has said it will continue the Access to Theatre sessions.
