FOLLOWING some delicate manoeuvres around the roads of Lowestoft the latest piece of equipment was delivered to the premises of Polgain Limited at Crown Score, off Whapload Road.

The company are manufacturers of cams, camshafts and production tooling and maintain the area's proud tradition in precision engineering.

The latest arrival at the premises marks a huge commitment to the future as the Kopp camshaft grinder is computer controlled and means staff can extend the range of products they can handle.

Adrian Bond, manager at Polgain, said getting the equipment to the premises was far from easy but the drivers of the wide load were skilled and delivered their load with no problems.

'Once we had the machine here it had to be lifted into position and again this was achieved successfully,' he said.

The 18 staff have built a fine reputation for excellence and customers include top car makers including Jaguar, Bentley, Aston Martin and Lotus.

'We make automotive camshafts for the development teams for these car manufacturers so we are working on engines that could come into production in a few years time,' said Mr Bond.

The company is one of the few in the UK that can produce individual cams as well as complete camshafts.

'We work on everything from top racing cars to giant ferries and railway engines.

'We cannot compete with companies in other parts of the world for large production runs but we can supply cams and camshafts that have to be engineered precisely although only a relatively small number are required,' said Mr Bond.

Many of the staff, including Mr Bond, had previously worked at Lowestoft company Zephyr Cams.

Polgain Limited is part of the Peter Colby group of companies that includes Norfolk Trucks, and Iveco Ford franchise involved in supplying and maintaining heavy goods vehicles.

'It is a major commitment for the company to purchase this latest camshaft grinder and shows what confidence we have in our staff and the industry here in Lowestoft,' said Mr Bond.
