A record 20 teams will battle it out for the honours in next week's annual Lowestoft pancake day race, as competitors bid to finally knock top flippers Iceland off the top spot.

Businesses such as Ganaden Properties, Graphitas and a team from The Journal will look to end the supermarket’s run of four years at number one when the starting gun is sounded for this year’s event at noon on Tuesday (February 17).

Organisers Lowestoft Vision encouraged companies and clubs to come forward for the fun and friendly race, after 2014 proved to be the most successful pancake race event in recent history.

However even more teams have signed up this year, with eight competitors also signed up for the separate mascot race.

Darren Newman, Lowestoft Vision Business Improvement District (BID), said: “The pancake day race has been on the events calendar for many years and has always been a really fun event.

“The event is always light-hearted and fun but it is interesting to see how competitive the teams become on the day, which makes viewing very entertaining.”

The race will take place outside Beales Department Store, in London Road North, Lowestoft, with competitors urged to enrol no later than 11.45am and bring a frying pan.

The competition has already been hotting up, with participants exchanging light-hearted remarks on Twitter about who is going to take the top spot.

Teams of three will take part in a relay race, whilst tossing pancakes along the route. The contest is broken down into heats, followed by semi-finals and a final.

Each team member must complete the circuit by flipping the pancake three times along each section of the course.

Prizes and trophies will be awarded to the winning team and mascot, with a new cup will be presented to the individual who displays the best flipping technique.

Community Access Trust will be making and selling tasty pancake snacks for all to enjoy.
