Walks, talks, music and a behind-the-scenes look at some of the area's hidden gems.

That's what is on the agenda for this year's Heritage Open Days festival in Lowestoft, which is set to herald everything that makes the town special.

And now - with the festival fast approaching - venues, artists and historians have just a few days left to register their interest in taking part.

Diana Moore, vice chairman of the Lowestoft steering group, expressed excitement at the remarkable growth of the festival in comparison to last year - a successful celebration in itself.

'This year we've got 50 to 60 venues taking part and there were only 17 last year,' said Miss Moore, who grew up in Lowestoft and moved back to the town last year after forging a career as an acclaimed classical singer.

'We've got an opening event at the Seagull Theatre, guided walks, talks and a closing concert with music inspired by the area played by artists with a Lowestoft connection.

'There's going to be so much going on and we are trying to take the celebration far and wide.'

Established in 1994 and funded by the National Trust and People's Postcode Lottery, Heritage Open Days is held annually to promote heritage across the UK.

Organisers come together every September to champion the very best of their towns and villages, with thousands of cultural treasures opening their doors to the public free of charge.

This year's festival will take place over a period of eight days from September 6 to 9 and 13 to 16, and Miss Moore is passionate about what her hometown has to offer.

'Having grown up here, I think Lowestoft has an awful lot to celebrate,' added Miss Moore, 47. 'This is a culturally rich part of the world and there are so many talented people. Everyone is a volunteer, so all those taking part are doing so with complete generosity.

'People are wary about getting involved when we first approach them but, when they realise all we want to do is celebrate what they're doing, there is so much enthusiasm.'

Miss Moore would like to thank all the organisations, clubs and others who have collaborated to arrange this year's festivities.
