Councillors have put off making a decision on plans for a new high school in Lowestoft.

Waveney District Council's development control committee discussed Suffolk County Council's proposals for a 900-pupil school to be built in Pakefield last night, but members voted to defer the application so that they can visit the site themselves.

The county council wants to build a new 26.5m school to serve the south of the town as part of the school organisation review which will see middle schools in Lowestoft scrapped from September 2011.

Waveney's planning committee is expected to give its views on the scheme at September's meeting, with the county council making a final decision on the proposals later in the autumn.
