Lowestoft’s annual Pancake Day challenge is set to return and a call has gone out for some flipping good teams to join in the fun.
Once again organised by Lowestoft Vision, the pancake race will take place on Tuesday, February 13, from noon in London Road North outside Beales department store.
Excited onlookers will be entertained by the mascot race which will kick the event off, followed by the main pancake relay race with teams of three representing local businesses. The race will see competitors duel against each other over a short course, flipping pancakes as they dash the distance.
And as always, teams will be sent back to the starting line if pancakes are not flipped or they are dropped on the floor.
The contest will be broken down into heats followed by semi-finals and a final to be crowned the overall winner.
A spokesman from Lowestoft Vision, the town’s business improvement district, said: “The annual event is very popular with the teams that enter and spectators alike.
“Let’s enjoy and let’s get the town buzzing with a vibrant, light hearted, good humoured, traditional event.”
Last year, seventeen teams and seven mascots went head to head in the race armed with frying pans and chefs’ hats.
And it was Access Ant who walked away victorious in the mascot race after beating Africa Alive!’s Reggie the Lion to the top spot.
In the main event, five heats were held with many of the teams struggling to cope with the windy conditions and pancake flipping techniques. But it was Graphitas, Lowestoft Flippers, Wilko and The Lowestoft Journal who progressed through to the final. And after a close race, Millie Devon, Michael Thompson and Jack Malcolm were crowned champions representing Wilko.
Trophies will once again be presented to the winning team and this year an award will also go to the individual who has the best ‘flipping’ technique.
Fancy dress is also highly encouraged, however it’s not compulsory, and each team must supply their own frying pan to use in the race.
