POLICE will be carrying out checks on the Bascule Bridge in Lowestoft after receiving reports of vehicles failing to stop when the lights are flashing to halt traffic for the bridge to open.
Officers have received reports from bridge operators saying an increasing number of motorists are not stopping when the lights come into operation to close the bridge.
On at least one occasion, a car continued onto the bridge despite the barriers having already starting to come down and operators regularly report up to ten vehicles continuing over the bridge once the lights have started flashing.
Those failing to comply with this lane closure traffic light signal can face a 60 fine and three penalty points on their licence and officers will now be carrying out regular checks to deal with motorists who do not stop.
