Waveney District Council says the development of Lowestoft's former post office will answer the town's long term needs.

Following its closure and move of post office facilities into WH Smith further up London Road North last year, the council bought the old building 'with the intention of boosting regeneration'.

Hudson Architects were appointed to work as conservation specialists to maximise the building's potential while retaining the character of the area.

While the premises have not yet been let for alternative use, the council says its preference is for the building to accommodate both housing and leisure facilities.

A spokesman for WDC said: 'We are currently progressing the council's preferred option for the site which includes a housing and leisure offer for the town centre.

'We are carrying out detailed market assessments of the current and projected housing need to ensure the proposed development seeks to answer the long term requirements of Lowestoft and the wider district.

'We are in discussions with potential tenants regarding the long term lease of the front part of the site however no formal agreement has been reached at this time.'
