Chairman Clare Cakebread welcomed Chris Brooks who gave an illustrated presentation on Samuel Morton Peto's contribution to the growth of Lowestoft from its origins as a small fishing town through its evolution to a fashionable Victorian seaside resort. Early pictures from around 1780 emphasised the development which was to take place over the next 70 years. Peto's energy and drive brought the railway to Lowestoft, extended the harbour and influenced the building of imposing hotels and marine residences. The legacy of his work is still much in evidence to this day. Mr Brooks was thanked by Enid Munro. Raffle winners were Clare Cakebread and Janice Cluer. The club's next meeting on July 21 and will begin at 2.15pm when members look forward to hosting a summer tea party together with a bumper raffle for the ladies of Waveney Probus. The guest speaker for this event will be Richard Mann.
