Concerns over traffic and the impact on people's health have been raised after plans for a new McDonald's drive-through in Lowestoft were submitted.

The two-floor restaurant could replace the disused petrol station on Kirkley Rise opposite the Spring Tide pub and would include a large dining area on the top floor, a children's play area, and outdoor seating.

However, with two McDonald's already in the town - one on London Road North and another in Pakefield - people raised concerns over the new restaurants potential impact.

Emma Baster said: 'We already have two, why build another one! Just encouraging obesity even more!'

Marty Hog added: 'And they moan about people being overweight, I know let's open another fast food place!'

Alongside health concerns were worries about the impact on traffic, with many people pointing out the possible issues on an already busy roundabout.

Melanie Pegg said: 'The traffic in that area is often a nightmare. This would make it even worse. I'll give it a miss.'

Sarah Hitcham added: 'Don't need another fast food place we've got enough, plus that roundabout would come to a standstill, it's bad enough as it is.'

Others highlighted the fact the new restaurant would be the second on the south side of Lake Lothing.

Kerrie Sillett said: 'Shame they can't pump some money into the other side of the bridge. I don't see quite how they will attract the southsiders, surely the Pakefield one will then split its business not make more as north side will stop pumping money into McDonald's as it takes too long to cross the river.'

Brett Shaw added: 'Why not build on the half finished site of the old town hall or at least get Burger King to finish that site first! We need a restaurant in north Lowestoft away from the bridge's traffic jams.'

Some, however, support the new restaurant. Valerie Warner said: 'Anything to make the place look better' and Anna Marie said: 'Anything's better than the eyesore that is there now!'

In the design and access statement, the developers said: 'The two storey building will provide a striking presence on the corner plot of the site, providing a landmark building on one of the main routes into the town.

'The wider area is considered of particularly low quality design, the proposed building will provide a high quality finish enhancing the wider Kirkley Rise redevelopment, encouraging investment into the wider site.'

The plans have been submitted to Waveney District Council.
