On Wednesday, April 22 a programme compiled by Coral Collins called All Kinds of Everything celebrating the anniversaries of famous composers was presented on her behalf by Terry Hepworth. The music played included Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture inspired by the cavern known as Fingal's Cave on the island of Staffa. It was performed by the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Christoph von Dohany. Following came the Ballet des Sylphes by Berlioz and the Barcarolle by Offenbach. Next four speeches by Sir Laurence Oliver from the 1948 film adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet. These dramatic speeches from the sound-track also featured the atmospheric music by Sir William Walton. Then into the magical world of fairies and elves with Mendelssohn's incidental music to a Midsummer Night's Dream played by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent. The Emperor Waltz of Joseph Strauss II was followed by an excerpt from Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss. The tenor Mario Lanza performed Visti la guibba from Paglicci by Leoncavallo. This was followed by the Andante from the Surprise Symphony by Haydn played by the Philharmonica Orchestra conducted by Igor Ivanenko. This entertaining programme ended with an excerpt from the Royal Fireworks by Handel played by the St Petersburg Chamber Festival Orchestra conducted by Arkady Terentiev.
