It has been a divisive subject within the town for months as different people have argued over the best location for the town's long-awaited third crossing.

Lowestoft Journal: Mike Holroyd has organised a petition to see which option people favour most for the third crossing in Lowestoft.Mike Holroyd has organised a petition to see which option people favour most for the third crossing in Lowestoft.

But as Lowestoft resident Mike Holroyd posted off his independent petition showing 1,500 to four in favour of the 'central' option over the 'eastern' crossing, The Journal dares ask...are we now all agreed?

Although almost everyone in the town has now accepted the need for a third crossing, the furious debate over where it should be sited began in December when consultants WSP recommended placing it in an eastern location over Lake Lothing, near to the existing Bascule bridge.

Suffolk County Council and other political leaders, including Waveney MP Peter Aldous, went along with that view - but got a huge backlash from a huge number of residents who preferred a more central siting over Lake Lothing as proposed by businessman Peter Colby.

Those attending the meeting also criticised WSP for its public consultation, where less than 200 people gave their views.

The debate prompted Mr Holroyd, of Station Road, Lowestoft, to organise his own consultation.

He put a leaflet entitled 'Third crossing: let the residents of Lowestoft be heard!' in Lowestoft Library and - not favouring one route or the other - asked people to express their view.

He believes it gives a clear indication of what the public think.

'One of the reasons that I started the ball rolling is that the people were saying at this meeting that there had been no consultation,' he said as he posted off the final petition to Suffolk County Council at the Post Office in Lowestoft High Street.

'This is not political - it is just me asking people what they want.

'This is what people are saying they want.'

He added that he wanted to thank everyone who had cast their votes and said the original purpose of his petition - that people's voices be heard - seems to have been achieved.

The Conservatives' parliamentary candidate for Waveney, Peter Aldous, has changed his view from supporting the eastern option to the central one, while on his visit to Lowestoft Prime Minister David Cameron said that it seems like there is a consensus emerging.

However there is still a debate over the exact scheme - Mr Colby has proposed a barrage-like structure with flood protection, while Mr Aldous favours a high-level bridge.
