A brother and sister are continuing their quest to complete a marathon camping challenge, after they were honoured with a special award.

Jake and Isabelle Ross, members of the 14th Lowestoft Scout troop, have been camping out in the garden of their Lowestoft home since May 1.

During lockdown the 14th Lowestoft group have met each week online with a range of activities and challenges organised for their members as they have not been able to meet face to face.

One of the activities was to camp for the weekend at home and prepare and cook their own food and cook a meal for the family.

With this being at the same time when the scouts would have taken part in their annual May day camp at Hautbois, 24 Scouts took part.

But it did not stop there for the determined duo – as Jake and Isabelle decided to continue their camping.

They have so far camped out for 78 nights, with their target to reach 100 nights.

Their fantastic feat was recognised by Suffolk’s County Commissioner, Mark Pearson, who awarded the brother and sister his Commendation award in a virtual ceremony that was also attended by Mel Buck, the Lowestoft District Commissioner.

During the 12 weeks of online programmes the 14th Lowestoft scouts have attained 20 Great Indoors badges – a special badge created during the lockdown, and 30 other activity badges.

Scout leader Richard Brabben hailed Jake and Isabelle’s efforts, and said: “We have had such a tremendous response from the troop members to our online meetings that because we have had to postpone our Summer Camp to Guernsey to 2021 we will be meeting weekly throughout the summer holidays with the hope to be able to meet up face to face sometime in September.”
