The police investigation into a serious sexual assault on Lowestoft seafront has been called off after a 36-year-old woman admitted that the incident did not happen.

A police investigation into a serious sexual assault at Lowestoft seafront has been dropped after a 36-year-old woman admitted the incident did not happen.

The woman had told police she was in the area behind the Hush Hush nightclub in the early hours of Sunday, September 21, when she was pushed against a wall and sexually assaulted.

After an investigation, police concluded the incident had not happened as reported and the woman then told officers she had made it up. She is now receiving appropriate support.

A spokesman for Suffolk police said: "All allegations of this nature are treated seriously by police and will be subject to a full investigation. We would not want to discourage genuine victims of crime from coming forward, but where allegations are found to be false, those making them may be subject to prosecution."
