A Lowestoft road has been described as “an accident waiting to happen” after residents challenged the council to have permit parking put in place.

Sixty residents have signed the online petition to relieve the congestion issue on Beresford Road, near the A1144.

Many cars are parked bumper-to-bumper on both sides of the road, which makes it “impossible” for more than one vehicle to travel down the street, residents claim.

Anonymous change.org user CS launched the petition, after allegedly being confronted for parking across a neighbour’s driveway while moving in.

The petition said: “It is impossible to have any spaces to pull in, so you have to reverse the whole way back down the street in order to let cars come through the other way, while trying to find a space to park.

“Sometimes even while trying to do the courteous thing and allowing someone to get out they then park themselves up so you gave away a potential space.

“I have Aspergers and this can make things quite difficult, especially if a stranger confronts me over rather trivial things, while moving is stressful enough as it is.”

Residents agreed driving down the narrow strip is often a struggle and parking is a “nightmare”.

George Rowlett, who also lives on Beresford Road, said parking is always a problem but the issue gets worse in the morning and evening.

He said: “It often happens around tea time when there is traffic on the road. Everybody has got a car because they may live in Lowestoft but they don’t work here. I don’t think the problem with it can be answered.

A spokesperson for Suffolk County Council said: “Due to decreasing budgets, we are having to prioritise spend to ensure value for money. At this moment, introducing further resident parking is not one of our priorities.

“In the past, residents of Beresford Road have not supported the introduction of resident parking control. If circumstances have now changed, the best way for a resident to request a new resident parking scheme or an extension to an existing scheme is to contact our Customer Service team with this request.

“Further information and contact details can be found on our website.”
