COLOURFUL costumes, bright lights and a touch of Greece will hit a Lowestoft high school next week.

More than 40 teenage students at Benjamin Britten High School will be taking audiences on a journey through their favourite musicals during three performances that form part of a special end-of-year show.

And organisers this week vowed that the performances will have people 'singing and dancing in the aisles'.

Drama, dance and music students from the school in Blyford Road have joined forces to rehearse and perform the debut performance of Gods and Musicals – from Greece to Grease!

The show, which has been especially written by media and English teacher Scott Mullinger, tells the story of Greek gods returning to Earth to save the school from a disastrous production due to the odious tones of a dreadful thespian. They set out to create the ultimate show featuring some of the most famous West End and Broadway musicals.

Featuring an original script written by Mr Mullinger, and a range of songs and dances as diverse as Pick a Pocket or Two from Oliver!, All that Jazz from Chicago, Hakuna Matata from The Lion King, and Fame, the play has been written to appeal to people of all ages.

Preparations and rehearsals for the performance have been taking place since April, with all the costumes, tickets, programmes and promotion designed by staff and students at the school.

'The cast comprises 40 students from Year 9, 10 and Year 11 leavers, with key performances from Harry Pull and Arthur Le Baleur, who play the Greek Gods, Dionysus and Apollo,' a school spokesman said. 'Also, watch out for stunning singing performances from Katy Hampshire, Lucy Mawford and Lucy Quantrill – complemented by stunning dance routines, with much of the choreography being organised by students Jane Colledge and Ebony Felgate.'

Head of drama, Corinne Breen, who has been working with students after school and at weekends in a hectic schedule, said: 'The students have been working incredibly hard and I am sure the show will be a huge success. Numerous staff members have also been involved in the creation of the show and this has further promoted the positive relationships we value at Benjamin Britten.'

l Full dress rehearsals began this week, with performances taking place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The doors open at the school at 6.30pm each night, with tickets priced at 5 per person, or 15 for a family of four.
