The establishment of a new community and services group tasked with raising traffic issues with councils and highways agencies was given initial support at a council meeting.

Nigel Page, who runs a taxi company in Lowestoft, brought the idea to Lowestoft Town Council during their full council meeting on Tuesday, June 5.

He suggested a working group of road users including taxi drivers, lorry drivers, and cyclists to work alongside the emergency services, Highways England, Suffolk Highways and Waveney District Council and provide recommendations for improving the roads in the town.

Mr Page said: 'Our proposal is to start with a system called 'Traffic Friends'. This includes a committee of people who use the road every day.

'There doesn't seem to be any procedure in place to look at the daily problems suffered on a daily basis.

'They should be looking at procedures that help the traffic flow.'

Mayor Ian Graham supported the suggestion along with much of the council.
